David's Birthday Weekend

For David's birthday we went on a semi-surprise (told him the week before) weekend fishing trip to Boone, NC.

We drove down the Blue Ridge Parkway from our home to the areas just around Boone. We took the first afternoon to take a long walk and picnic around Price Lake.

David did a little fishing on the lake, but only caught this little squirt of a fish.

We stayed in a little one room cabin at the KOA in Boone. Before turning in that night we played in the playground. . . . .

And went on a walk around the property (this is an old grain silo at the entrance of the campground).

Then we headed back into the cabin for reading and bedtime. The cabin had twin bunk beds for kids and Ella had an absolute BLAST climbing up the side of bed, hoisting herself onto the mattress and rolling all over the bottom bunk bed. (Again I have really cute video of this and cannot post it yet . . . . but maybe David will get that together for me before too long).

The next morning we had breakfast at one of our favorite Boone Restaurants - The Daniel Boone Inn (you pay a flat rate and they bring out as much home style food as you can eat) .... so good!!

After breakfast we staked out some local streams for better trout fishing. We found a couple of great streams . . . . I read my book in the breeze of a beautiful day, Ella sat in the back of the car and watched Veggie Tales, and David fished up and down several native streams. Needless to say, everyone had a HAPPY DAY :)

The results

Our delicious birthday dinner . . . . freshly grilled trout, asparagus, taters on the grill, home made bread, sweet tea, and apple pie for dessert. We were full and happy!

That night a HUGE storm came through and rocked the cabin quite a bit - we tried to go out fishing again on the parkway and this is all we found . . . .

If you look very closely in the picture you can see a HUGE house that is a store and historic tour off the parkway, but you couldn't even really see it from the parkway because the fog was so very thick.
